Wowsers, that was riveting!
What a mess. I feel sorry for Dorland. She sounds needy and vulnerable and probably was looking for admiration, but that’s not an unreasonable outcome from a difficult childhood.
And Lawson is an out and out bitch, but I’m not sure she’s done much legally wrong. She was clearly shat to tears by Dorland’s praise-seeking and worked it through by mocking her to common friends and then writing a mean story about her. That said, I can see how it happens and if the scenario was right imagine how I could end up doing something like that. I can see how things can go from vent -> bitchy -> outrageous when it’s egged on by supporters, it’s probably how a lot of outrageous behaviour comes about including group violence and so on.
I wonder how it would have gone if instead of doing this whole “it’s not about Dorland, it’s art” bullshit that any human can see through, what if Lawson had at some point gone “Look yeah, you’re a really annoying praise seeking person and it shits me to tears so I bitched about you and wrote a mean story about you. But it’s now a great story so I want to publish it.”. I feel like this isn’t really about plagiarism, I think that there is something in there about Dorland just wanting Lawson to admit it’s about her and that it was mean. But I guess she won’t be happy if it keeps getting published. But Lawson’s complete lack of genuineness seems to be part of what upsets her, and that seems pretty accurate.
And playing the race card was really low. She was in the privileged position.
