I understand MrsT. After several experiences as a child, I have a bit of a phobia too. I was the same in that I had put off a dental appointment for way longer than I care to admit. Then last year, something happened and I was forced to go. I went and after doing so I felt so much better. I am probably due for another visit.
You can do it. Do you currently have a family dentist? Perhaps let them know and they will do what they can to ensure you feel safe.
Otherwise, there are dentists out there who take people with dental phobias and anxiety.
There is also exposure therapy. As in, you slowly build yourself up to facing the phobia. For example, you drive to the dentist. Next time you sit in the car, next time you get out of the car and walk towards the building etc.
After my visit, I felt much more confident. I felt as though I had overcome something great. It was empowering.
