An article in The Age about bikinis in beach volleyball and beach handball. The Norwegian team that got fined play beach handball, which is not an Olympic sport. (It doesn’t mean the uniform isn’t sexist, but I know I wondered why the governing body was leaving a decision until August instead of sorting it out before the Olympics.)
And while I think most of the female beach volleyballers do wear bikinis, apparently they can wear more covering uniforms, and the Egyptian team has worn long sleeves, long pants and hijabs at the Olympics.
I’m not sure if I agree with the reasoning by the athletes quoted in the article about why it’s so great for them to wear bikinis, and I do wonder if some athletes feel pressured into wearing a bikini rather than something more covering (especially if there are sponsorship dollars at stake) but at least the volleyballers do have a choice of uniforms.
