i too think that the delta strain is a very different beast and we may never get to control it. that’s frightening on two levels I guess - first one being the obvious - numbers will rise, hospitals will be overwhelmed due to a largely unvaccinated population.
but it’s also worrying because of what the population has come to expect - lock us down and wait for zero transmission. nothing else seems to be acceptable. so now we’re in slow boiling frog territory. keep extending the lockdown ….keep restricting. the thing about lockdowns is they’re very hard to get out of. people’s appetite for risk shifts. they become obsessed with the numbers and with “donut days” - they look to the unattainable future while ignoring the unbearable present.
vaccination is the key - but we can’t get the percentages up and we’re not vaccinating kids - yet.
maybe delta will take the decision out of our hands - we will vaccinate who we can, many will catch it - people will die, sadly - and those who don’t will have wonderful natural immunity (at least to that strain, but maybe not to others; vaccinations may not work against all strains) minus the blood clotting. we are all here because our ancestors survived the Black Death. It’s a bleak thought, but at some point (I’m a broken record) we are going to have to open up. we will have to. and it may not be at zero community transmission. remember flattening the curve?
(ftr i am fully vaccinated)
