My DS got a fish tank around the same age. Although as the story goes with most kids pets, I’m the one that takes care of it.
They’re fine. I don’t do too much to look after them. I like having a fish tank to look at. Be prepared to regularly buy fish when they randomly die, and plants. Although the plants on the little wooden logs have been awesome, they are still going strong.
Definitely cycle the tank before getting the fish.
Get your little testing kits for the water so you can monitor it and adjust when needed.
We got a tank that’s all in one ie filter, lights etc, seperate heater though. I have had trouble with the light strip dying and needing a replacement, which was really hard work as they’d change the plug style, had to contact the company etc, then the new one has started playing up too. I told the fish guy at the shop about it and that next time I don’t think I’ll get an all in one tank, but he reckons they’re usually great and have no problems. Except my friend with the same tank had the same problem. So I don’t know. I’d definitely recommend though going with a well known brand, so it’s easier to get parts if needed.
