I got the primary school week and high school last week. I always liked a EB naplan test discussion and was wondering if there was going to be one, but looks like lots still waiting for their results.
It is just one test, but I still find it useful. My eldest is in grade 9 and has been interesting to see the changes. She started off in top band for everything. In writing, she stayed in band 6 for 3 different tests and finally made it out this year! With the rest, they seemed to fluctuate. One year she would be high in something and lower in something else, then the next year the lower result would be high and she would not have as much gain in her high area. In grade 7 she was top band in grammar with a solid band 9 score. This year she was in the top of band 8 for grammar. So she had gone down half a band! Yet in spelling she dropped in year 7 and was not even in the top 20%, and now she is in the top band and got a result that would put her in the top few percent. So variable! And just shows that growth does not necessarily follow a straight line.
I have another kid with a learning disability who sometimes is not passing subjects at school, which I think is more about accommodations not being made rather than his knowledge base. I find it really helps my cause of explaining this when his naplan results are all above average.
And then I have another kid who I am in the process of getting a learning disability diagnosed. It is quite interesting to see the wide discrepancy in his scores and are certainly an indicator of an issue. I thought good readers were meant to be good spellers, yet he was top band for reading and only just out of the bottom 20% for spelling.
So I do take it with a grain of salt and it is one test on one day, but there are some useful things to be gained from it from my point of view.
